How to Replace Your Espresso Machine Group Seal: A Step-by-Step Guide
Share
If your espresso machine is leaking around the portafilter, producing weak shots, or leaving grounds in your cup, a worn group seal is almost certainly the culprit. Replacing it is one of the most common — and most rewarding — espresso machine maintenance tasks you can do at home. This guide walks you through everything you need to know.
Why Group Seals Need Replacing
The group seal (also called a group gasket) is a rubber or silicone ring that sits inside the group head and creates a watertight seal when you lock in your portafilter. Over time, heat, pressure, and coffee oils cause the seal to harden, crack, or compress — breaking that seal.
Signs your group seal needs replacing:
- Coffee or water leaking around the portafilter during extraction
- Portafilter feels loose or requires excessive force to lock
- Grounds appearing in your cup (shower screen bypass)
- Inconsistent extraction pressure or weak shots
- Visible cracking, hardening, or deformation of the seal
Most home espresso machines need a new group seal every 6–12 months depending on usage. Commercial machines may require more frequent replacement.
Tools and Parts You'll Need
- Replacement group seal — matched to your machine's brand and group head type (E61, La Marzocco, Rancilio, Rocket, ECM/Profitec, Gaggia, etc.)
- Shower screen — worth replacing at the same time
- Flathead screwdriver or group seal pick/hook tool
- Shower screen screw driver (usually a large flathead or hex key)
- Clean cloth or towel
- Group head brush
- Optional: food-safe silicone grease
Tip: Always source OEM or high-quality silicone seals. Cheap rubber seals harden faster and can impart off-flavours into your coffee.
Step-by-Step: Replacing Your Group Seal
Step 1 — Turn Off and Cool Down the Machine
Switch off your machine and allow it to cool completely. Never work on a pressurised, hot group head. For most home machines, 30–45 minutes is sufficient.
Step 2 — Remove the Portafilter
Twist out and set aside the portafilter. Inspect the existing seal — note how it sits in the groove so you can replicate the installation.
Step 3 — Remove the Shower Screen
Using the appropriate screwdriver, unscrew the shower screen screw (centre of the group head). The shower screen will drop free. Set both aside — this is a good time to soak the screen in hot water and backflush detergent.
Step 4 — Extract the Old Group Seal
Using a flathead screwdriver or a dedicated seal pick, carefully work around the edge of the old seal and lever it out of its groove. Take care not to scratch the group head body. The seal may be brittle if it's been in place for a long time — it may come out in pieces.
Step 5 — Clean the Group Head
Thoroughly clean the seal groove and group head face with a group brush and damp cloth. Remove all old rubber residue, coffee oils, and debris. A clean seating surface is critical for a proper seal.
Step 6 — Install the New Group Seal
Press the new seal firmly and evenly into the groove. Work around the circumference to ensure it seats flat with no twisting or bunching. If using silicone grease, apply a very thin film to the outer edge of the seal only.
Step 7 — Reinstall the Shower Screen
Refit the clean shower screen and tighten the screw — firm but not overtightened. A stripped screw thread is a common and avoidable mistake.
Step 8 — Test the Seal
Lock in your portafilter (without a basket/coffee) and run a short flush cycle. Check for any leaks around the portafilter collar. If the seal is seated correctly, you should have a firm lock and zero leakage.
Run a full extraction and enjoy the results — a properly sealed group head makes a noticeable difference to shot consistency and pressure stability.

How Often Should You Replace Your Group Seal?
As a general guide:
- Home use (1–3 shots/day): every 6–12 months
- Heavy home use (4+ shots/day): every 3–6 months
- Commercial/prosumer: inspect monthly, replace as needed
Silicone seals generally outlast rubber seals and are worth the small price premium. If you're replacing a rubber seal, consider upgrading to silicone at the same time.
Regular maintenance keeps your machine performing at its best and extends its service life significantly. A $10 seal replaced on schedule is far cheaper than a $200 service call.
