Your ECM or Profitec espresso machine is leaking water around the group handle, the portafilter no longer feels tight, or the handle turns farther to the right than it used to. These symptoms usually point to one service item: the group seal, also called the group gasket.

The group seal creates a watertight connection between the portafilter and group head. Heat, pressure, coffee oils, and daily use gradually harden and flatten it. Once worn, it can no longer hold the portafilter firmly or stop water escaping during extraction. Replacing the gasket, cleaning the group head, and replacing or upgrading the shower screen will usually restore a firm lock and even water flow.

The 4 Symptoms of a Worn Group Seal

  • Water leaks around the group handle — water escapes from the edge of the portafilter while the pump is running
  • The group handle is not tight enough — the portafilter feels loose after it is locked into the group
  • The handle turns too far to the right — a flattened gasket allows the portafilter to rotate farther than normal
  • The seal looks hard, cracked, or compressed — heat and age cause the gasket to lose its flexibility and sealing pressure
💡 Note: Coffee grounds on the group rim can also cause a temporary leak. Clean the basket rim and group seal first. If leaking returns or the handle still feels loose, replace the gasket.

How to Replace the Group Gasket and Shower Screen — Step by Step

What You'll Need

  • Compatible ECM or Profitec group gasket
  • Compatible replacement or upgraded shower screen
  • Short flat-blade screwdriver or suitable group-screen tool
  • Group-head brush
  • Food-safe espresso-machine cleaner
  • Clean cloth or towel

Step 1 — Switch Off, Unplug, and Let the Machine Cool

Switch the machine off and unplug it from the wall. Allow the group head to cool completely before starting. The metal group, shower screen, and retained water can be extremely hot.

Step 2 — Remove the Shower Screen

Depending on your model, remove the centre screw or carefully work the shower screen and gasket down from the group head. Protect the polished surfaces and avoid scratching the brass group.

Step 3 — Remove the Old Group Gasket

Use a suitable tool to pull the old gasket from its groove. An old gasket may be hard, brittle, or stuck in place. Work carefully around the gasket rather than forcing the tool against the group head.

💡 Tip: Before removing the old gasket, note which side faces upward. Some replacement gaskets are directional. Follow the markings or fitting instructions supplied with your new part.

Step 4 — Clean the Group Head

Remove coffee oils and residue from the gasket groove and the area behind the shower screen. A clean groove helps the new gasket sit evenly and seal correctly.

Step 5 — Fit the New or Upgraded Shower Screen

Position the clean replacement shower screen in the correct orientation. Make sure it sits flat and is compatible with your exact ECM or Profitec model.

Step 6 — Install the New Group Gasket

Press the new gasket evenly into the group-head groove. Use the portafilter to push the gasket and shower screen fully into place. Do not use excessive force or damage the edge of the gasket.

Step 7 — Lock In the Group Handle and Test

  1. Insert the portafilter and lock it into the group
  2. Check that the handle feels firm without needing excessive force
  3. Reconnect and heat the machine
  4. Flush the group head
  5. Run a test extraction and check for leaks around the portafilter
  6. After the first few uses, check that the gasket remains seated evenly

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I replace the shower screen at the same time?

It is a good time to inspect it. Replace the screen if it is damaged, blocked, distorted, or heavily stained. A compatible precision shower-screen upgrade may improve water distribution and make cleaning easier, but correct fitment matters.

Why is the handle still loose after replacing the gasket?

Confirm that the gasket is the correct thickness and has been installed in the correct direction. If the handle still rotates too far, the portafilter lugs or group-head locking surfaces may be worn and should be inspected.

How often should the group gasket be replaced?

Replacement frequency depends on machine use, heat exposure, cleaning habits, and gasket material. Replace it when leaking begins, the portafilter becomes loose, or the seal is visibly hard, cracked, or flattened.

Can I keep using the machine while the group seal is leaking?

We recommend replacing it promptly. Escaping hot water can make the portafilter unsafe to handle, create a mess, and affect extraction pressure. Stop using the machine if the portafilter will not lock securely.

Need Help Choosing the Correct Parts?

ECM and Profitec models can use different gasket sizes and shower screens. Check the exact machine model before ordering.
