E61 Coffee Machine Steam Coming from the Top — 3 Causes and How to Fix Them

Steam rising from the top of your E61 espresso machine — whether it's a Rocket, ECM, or Isomac — is a sign that something is wrong with the boiler system. It could be a minor seal failure or a more serious overheating fault. The good news is that the steam gauge on the front of the machine tells you exactly where to start your diagnosis.

Steam escaping from an espresso machine is a burn hazard. Do not reach inside the machine while it is hot or pressurised. Switch the machine off, allow it to cool, and release pressure via the steam wand before opening any panels or touching internal components.
Step 1: Check the Steam Gauge
The steam gauge on your E61 machine shows the boiler pressure in bar. This single reading tells you which of the three causes is most likely:
- Gauge reads above 1.5 bar — the boiler is overheating. The pressurestat has failed and is not cutting power to the heating element at the correct pressure. Go to Cause 1.
- Gauge reads within normal range (0.9–1.3 bar) — the boiler pressure is correct but steam is still escaping. The fault is a leaking valve or pipe. Go to Cause 2 or 3.
Cause 1: Failed Pressurestat (Boiler Overheating — Gauge Above 1.5 Bar)
The pressurestat is the component that controls boiler temperature by switching the heating element on and off based on boiler pressure. When it fails, the element runs continuously, the boiler overheats, and pressure climbs above the normal operating range. The safety valve then opens to vent the excess pressure — which is the steam you see coming from the top of the machine.
Symptoms
- Steam gauge reads above 1.5 bar
- Machine feels excessively hot to touch
- Steam venting from the safety valve outlet (usually a tube exiting the top or rear of the machine)
- Machine takes much longer than usual to reach operating temperature, or never settles
The Fix: Replace the Pressurestat
Replace the pressurestat with the correct unit for your machine. These are the correct replacements for Rocket and Isomac E61 machines:
💡 Important: After a pressurestat failure and boiler overheat event, always inspect the safety valve as well. Repeated actuation at high pressure can damage the safety valve seat, causing it to weep even after the pressurestat is replaced.
Cause 2: Leaking Safety Valve or Anti-Vacuum Valve (Gauge Normal)
If the steam gauge reads within the normal operating range (typically 0.9–1.3 bar) but steam is still escaping from the top of the machine, the boiler is not overheating — a valve is leaking. There are two valves to check:
- Safety valve — designed to open and vent if pressure exceeds a set limit. If the valve seat is worn or damaged, it will weep steam continuously even at normal pressure.
- Anti-vacuum valve — a one-way valve that prevents a vacuum forming in the boiler as it cools. When its internal seal fails, it leaks steam or water during operation.
How to Identify the Leaking Valve
With the machine cool and unplugged, remove the top panel and locate both valves on the boiler. Look for moisture, scale deposits (white residue), or visible dripping around the valve body or its outlet tube. The leaking valve will show clear signs of weeping.
The Fix: Replace the Faulty Valve
Cause 3: Pipe or Fitting Leak
If both the pressurestat and valves check out, the steam may be escaping from a cracked pipe, a loose fitting, or a failed pipe seal inside the machine. Boiler pipes and fittings can develop micro-cracks over time, particularly at bends and joints that are subject to repeated thermal expansion and contraction.
How to Identify a Pipe Leak
- Remove the top and side panels with the machine cool and unplugged
- Look for scale deposits (white residue) or moisture around pipe joints, T-pieces, and fittings connected to the boiler
- A pipe leak will typically show a clear trail of scale or moisture leading from the leak point
- Loose fittings can sometimes be re-tightened; cracked pipes or fittings must be replaced
💡 Tip: If you can't locate the source of the leak visually, run the machine briefly at operating temperature with the panels off (standing clear of the boiler) and watch for where steam or moisture first appears. Switch off immediately once the source is identified.
Frequently Asked Questions
My steam gauge reads 1.2 bar but steam is still coming out — which valve is it?
At normal pressure, the safety valve should be closed. If steam is escaping, the anti-vacuum valve is the more likely culprit — its seal wears out with normal use and it's a common failure point on E61 machines. Inspect both valves for signs of weeping and replace the one showing moisture or scale deposits.
Can I run the machine while it's leaking steam?
No — if the gauge is above 1.5 bar, switch the machine off immediately. Running an overheating machine risks damaging the boiler, heating element, and other components. If the gauge is normal but a valve is leaking, the machine can be used briefly but the valve should be replaced as soon as possible to prevent water damage inside the machine.
Does this apply to ECM machines as well?
