Wega Coffee Machine Not Heating Up: 3 Common Causes & Fixes

Wega Coffee Machine Not Heating Up?

If your Wega espresso machine has stopped heating, don't panic — this is one of the most common issues we see. There are three likely culprits, and in many cases you can diagnose and fix the problem yourself.

1. Heat Limit Switch Tripped

The heat limit switch (also called a thermal cutout or thermostat limiter) is a safety device that trips when the machine overheats. Once tripped, it cuts power to the heating circuit — which means no heat.

How to reset it:

  • Turn off and unplug the machine and allow it to cool completely.
  • Remove the top or side panel to access the boiler area (refer to your model's service manual).
  • Locate the heat limit switch — it's typically a small round disc mounted on or near the boiler.
  • Press the small reset button in the centre of the switch until you feel/hear a click.
  • Reassemble, power on, and test.

Note: If the switch trips repeatedly, there is an underlying cause (e.g. a faulty thermostat or pressure switch) that must be addressed first.

2. Pressure Switch Worn Out

The pressure switch monitors boiler pressure and signals the heating element to cycle on and off. When it wears out, it may fail to activate the element — leaving you with a cold boiler.

Signs of a faulty pressure switch:

  • Machine powers on but boiler never reaches temperature.
  • Pressure gauge reads zero or fluctuates erratically.
  • Machine heats intermittently or not at all.

What to do: The pressure switch is a serviceable part. Test it with a multimeter for continuity, and replace it if it fails. We stock an OEM-compatible replacement — the SAB P302-6 Pressure Switch (3 Pole, 30A) — suitable for Wega and other commercial coffee machines.

3. Heating Element Burnout

The heating element is the core component that heats the water in the boiler. Over time — especially in areas with hard water — scale build-up can cause the element to burn out entirely.

Signs of a failed heating element:

  • No heat at all, even after resetting the heat limit switch.
  • Tripped circuit breaker when the machine is switched on.
  • Visible corrosion or scale damage on the element (when inspected).

What to do: Test the element with a multimeter. A reading of OL (open loop) confirms it has failed and needs replacement. This is a more involved repair — if you're not confident, we recommend having it serviced by a qualified technician.
