Rocket Faustino Grinder Touchpad Dark and No Interaction — Here's What's Causing It
Share
You walk up to your Rocket Faustino coffee grinder, press the touchpad — and nothing happens. The display is completely dark. No lights, no response, no grinding. The grinder is plugged in and the power outlet is working fine, but the machine is completely dead at the interface.
This is a well-known failure mode on the Rocket Faustino (and Giannino). In the vast majority of cases, one of three components has failed: the control board, the power supply board, or the main power switch. Here's how to work through each one.
⚠️ Safety First
Always unplug the grinder from the wall before opening it or inspecting any internal components. The grinder operates at 220–240V mains voltage.
Cause 1: Failed Control Board (Most Likely)
The control board is the primary suspect when the Faustino touchpad goes dark with no interaction. The control board drives the touchpad display, processes button inputs, and controls the grinder motor. When it fails — typically due to a power surge, capacitor failure, or age — the display goes completely dark and the grinder becomes unresponsive.
How to Identify a Failed Control Board
- Display is completely dark — no backlight, no digits, no indicators
- No response to any touchpad input
- Grinder motor does not run
- Power supply board and power switch test correctly (see below)
- Fault appeared suddenly — often after a power outage or surge
The Fix
Replace the control board. This is the correct replacement board for the Rocket Faustino 3.1 and Giannino:

The power supply board converts mains voltage to the lower DC voltages required by the control board and touchpad. If the power supply board fails, the control board receives no power — resulting in a dark, unresponsive display even if the control board itself is perfectly fine.
How to Identify a Failed Power Supply Board
- Display is dark and unresponsive (same symptoms as a failed control board)
- If you have a multimeter: check the DC output voltage from the power supply board — if it reads zero or significantly below spec, the power supply board has failed
- Visible burn marks, swollen capacitors, or a burning smell on the power supply board
- Fault appeared after a power surge or lightning event
The Fix
Replace the power supply board. This is the correct replacement for the Rocket Faustino:

Less common, but worth checking before replacing boards. The main power switch (the physical on/off switch on the grinder body) can fail internally — its contacts wear out or weld shut in the open position, meaning the machine never receives power even when switched on. Similarly, the touchpad membrane itself can delaminate or fail, making it appear the display is dark when in fact the display is fine but inputs aren't registering.
How to Check the Power Switch
- Set a multimeter to continuity mode
- With the grinder unplugged, disconnect the switch from the circuit
- Toggle the switch to the ON position and test across the terminals — you should get continuity
- Toggle to OFF — continuity should be absent
- If the switch shows no continuity in the ON position, it has failed and must be replaced
How to Check the Touchpad
- If the display backlight is visible but no buttons respond, the touchpad membrane is the likely cause rather than the control board
- If the display is completely dark (no backlight at all), the touchpad is not the primary fault — focus on the control board and power supply board first
💡 Diagnosis tip: Work through the causes in order — power switch first (easiest to test), then power supply board (check DC output), then control board (replace if all else checks out). Replacing the control board without ruling out a failed power supply board can result in damaging the new board.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Faustino display was flickering before it went dark — does that change the diagnosis?
Flickering before failure is a strong indicator of a failing power supply board — specifically failing capacitors that can no longer maintain stable DC output. Start with the power supply board in this case.
The grinder worked fine then suddenly went dead — no warning at all
Sudden failure with no prior symptoms is more typical of a control board failure or a power surge event. Check whether the power outlet is working and whether any other appliances on the same circuit were affected at the same time.
Can I test the control board before replacing it?
Not easily without specialist equipment. The most practical approach is to confirm the power supply board is outputting correct voltage first — if it is, and the display is still dark, the control board is the fault.
Does this apply to the Rocket Giannino as well?
Yes — the Faustino 3.1 and Giannino share the same control board. The diagnosis process and replacement parts are identical.
