Rancilio Silvia Pro: Water Keeps Running and Tripping Your Circuit Breaker — Control Board Fix

You haven't touched a button — but your Rancilio Silvia Pro is running water by itself. Worse, it's tripping your home circuit breaker. This combination of faults is serious and points directly to a failed control board.

The control board (a Gicar unit on the Silvia Pro and Silvia Pro X) manages all of the machine's electronic functions: solenoid activation, pump control, heating element switching, and shot timing. When the board fails internally — due to a shorted relay, a blown component, or moisture damage — it can send uncontrolled signals to the pump and solenoid, causing water to run without input. The electrical fault that causes this can also draw excess current, which trips the circuit breaker at your switchboard as a safety response.

A machine that trips a circuit breaker has an active electrical fault. Do not reset the breaker and keep running the machine. Switch the machine off at the power switch, unplug it from the wall, and do not use it again until the fault is diagnosed and repaired. Repeated tripping can damage your home wiring.

Why Does a Failed Control Board Trip the Circuit Breaker?

Inside the Gicar control board, relays switch power to the pump, solenoid, and heating element. When a relay fails in the closed ("on") position — or a component on the board shorts — it can activate multiple high-draw components simultaneously, or create a direct short circuit. The total current draw exceeds the rating of your circuit breaker, which trips as designed to protect your wiring.

On the Silvia Pro, the pump, dual heating elements, and solenoid valve all draw significant current. If the board activates these together uncontrollably, the surge is enough to trip a standard 10A or 16A household circuit.


How to Confirm It's the Control Board

  • Water runs without any button press — the board is sending an uncontrolled signal to the pump and solenoid
  • Circuit breaker trips immediately or shortly after powering on — indicates an electrical overcurrent fault originating from the board
  • No other obvious cause — solenoid, pump, and heating elements are individually functional but the board is misfiring them
  • Machine may show erratic behaviour before full failure — buttons not responding correctly, shot timers behaving oddly, or water running longer than programmed
💡 Note: A tripping circuit breaker can also be caused by a failed heating element (short to earth) or a pump failure. However, if the machine is also running water autonomously without button input, the control board is the primary suspect — a heating element or pump failure alone will not cause uncontrolled water flow.

How to Replace the Control Board

What You'll Need

  • Replacement Gicar control board (see product below)
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Camera or phone (to photograph wiring before disconnecting)
  • Needle-nose pliers (for connector removal)

Step 1 — Switch Off, Unplug, and Allow to Cool

Power the machine off at the main switch and unplug it from the wall. Do not work on the machine while it is plugged in under any circumstances. Allow the machine to cool fully — at least 30 minutes after last use.

Step 2 — Remove the Top Panel

Using a Phillips head screwdriver, remove the screws securing the top panel of the Silvia Pro. On most variants the screws are located at the rear of the top panel. Lift the panel off carefully and set it aside.

Step 3 — Photograph the Wiring Before Disconnecting

Before touching any connectors, take clear photos of all the wiring connected to the control board from multiple angles. This is critical — the board has multiple connectors and incorrect rewiring will cause further damage or prevent the machine from functioning. Refer to these photos throughout reassembly.

Step 4 — Disconnect the Control Board

Carefully disconnect all connectors from the old control board. Most connectors are push-and-pull — squeeze the clip and pull straight out. Do not pull on the wires themselves. Label connectors with tape if needed to assist with reinstallation.

Step 5 — Remove the Old Board

The control board is typically mounted to the machine frame with screws or clips. Remove the mounting screws and carefully lift the board out of the machine. Set it aside.

Step 6 — Fit the New Board

Position the new Gicar control board in the mounting location and secure it with the mounting screws. Reconnect all connectors in the correct positions, referring to your photos from Step 3. Double-check every connector is fully seated before proceeding.

Step 7 — Refit Panel and Test

  1. Refit the top panel and secure the screws
  2. Plug the machine back in
  3. Power on and allow to heat to operating temperature
  4. Confirm no water runs without button input
  5. Run a test shot and confirm normal operation
  6. Monitor the circuit breaker — it should not trip

Could the heating element be causing the circuit breaker to trip instead of the board?

Yes — a heating element with a short to earth can trip a circuit breaker. However, a failed heating element will not cause water to run without button input. If the machine is running water autonomously and tripping the breaker, the control board is the most likely single cause of both symptoms. If only the breaker trips without uncontrolled water flow, have the heating element tested first.

My circuit breaker trips immediately when I plug the machine in — is that still the board?

An immediate trip on plug-in (before even switching the machine on) suggests a hard short circuit — this could be the board, the heating element, or the power switch.
