Quick Mill Aquila: No Water from Group and Pump Won't Stop — Blocked Flow Jet Fix

Your Quick Mill Aquila starts a shot — the pump runs, but no water comes out of the group head. Worse, the pump keeps running and won't stop on its own. This combination of symptoms points to one specific fault: the flow jet restrictor inside the pump is blocked.

The flow jet is a small precision orifice that regulates water flow through the pump circuit. When it becomes blocked with scale, mineral deposits, or debris, water can't pass through correctly. The pump runs continuously because the machine's flow sensor never detects the expected water flow — it just keeps trying. Left unaddressed, running the pump dry will cause it to overheat and fail permanently.

Step-by-Step: How to Clean the Pump Flow Jet

Step 1 — Switch Off, Unplug, and Turn Off Water

Power the machine off at the main switch and unplug it from the wall. Turn off the water supply tap behind the machine. Allow the machine to cool fully before proceeding — the boiler and pump will be hot after use.

Step 2 — Remove the Side Panel

Using a Phillips head screwdriver, remove the screws securing the side panel of the Aquila. On most Quick Mill machines the panel is held by screws at the rear edge. Carefully lift the panel off and set it aside. This gives you access to the pump and its fittings.

 

💡 Tip: Place a towel under the pump area before disconnecting any fittings — there will be residual water in the lines that will drip when the pump is removed.

Step 3 — Locate and Unscrew the Pump

The pump is typically mounted on rubber anti-vibration feet near the base of the machine. Identify the inlet and outlet fittings on the pump body. Using a spanner, carefully loosen and disconnect the fittings. Note which fitting is the inlet (from the water supply) and which is the outlet (to the boiler/group) before disconnecting — take a photo if needed.

Once the fittings are disconnected, unscrew or unclip the pump from its mounting bracket and remove it from the machine.

Step 4 — Locate and Remove the Flow Jet Restrictor

With the pump removed, inspect the inlet fitting port on the pump body. The flow jet restrictor is a small brass or plastic disc with a precision orifice, seated inside the inlet port. It may also be located in the fitting itself rather than the pump body — check both.

Carefully remove the flow jet using a pick or small flathead screwdriver. Inspect the orifice — if it is blocked with scale or debris, the hole will appear partially or fully closed.

Step 5 — Clean the Flow Jet

Soak the flow jet in a citric acid solution or espresso machine descaler for 15–30 minutes to dissolve mineral scale. After soaking, use a fine pin or pick to gently clear the orifice. Do not use anything that could enlarge the hole — the jet is precision-sized and enlarging it will affect pump performance. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and hold the jet up to a light source to confirm the orifice is fully clear.

💡 Tip: If the flow jet is cracked, corroded, or the orifice cannot be cleared, replace the pump rather than reusing a damaged jet. A damaged restrictor will cause incorrect flow rates even if it appears clear.

Step 6 — Refit the Pump and Test

  1. Reinsert the clean flow jet into its seat in the pump inlet port
  2. Refit the pump to its mounting bracket
  3. Reconnect the inlet and outlet fittings — ensure they are tight to prevent leaks
  4. Replace the side panel and refit the screws
  5. Turn the water supply back on
  6. Plug the machine in and power it on
  7. Allow the machine to heat to operating temperature
  8. Run a test shot and confirm water flows normally from the group head and the pump stops at the correct time
  9. Check around all pump fittings for leaks

How do I know it's the flow jet and not the pump itself that's failed?

If the pump is running (you can hear it) but no water comes from the group, the pump motor is working — the blockage is in the flow path. A failed pump motor will typically be silent or make a grinding/seized sound. Clean the flow jet first before replacing the pump.

The pump stopped running after I cleaned the jet, but water flow is still weak — why?
