La Marzocco PB: Water Condensation on Cup Tray and Back Panel — Safety Valve Leaking
You notice the cup tray on top of your La Marzocco PB is wet — not from spilled coffee, but from condensation forming on the surface. Look closer and there's also a faint dampness on the back panel of the machine. The machine is running normally, pressure looks fine, but something is clearly venting steam where it shouldn't be.
This is one of the most recognisable symptoms of a leaking boiler safety valve. The safety valve is designed to vent excess pressure in an emergency — but when its internal seat wears out, it weeps steam continuously at normal operating pressure. That steam rises inside the machine, condenses on the cool metal surfaces of the cup tray and back panel, and appears as moisture or water droplets.

Switch the machine off and unplug it before opening any panels or touching internal components. Allow the machine to cool fully — the boiler and safety valve will be extremely hot during and after operation.
Why the Cup Tray and Back Panel?
On the La Marzocco PB, the safety valve outlet tube routes vented steam toward the rear and top of the machine. When the valve weeps, the steam follows this path and condenses on the nearest cool surfaces — which are typically the underside of the cup tray and the interior of the back panel. The moisture then seeps through to the visible surfaces, appearing as condensation or water droplets.
This is distinct from a water pipe leak, which typically produces dripping water rather than condensation, and from a drain box overflow, which appears at the base of the machine. Condensation on the top and back = steam source = safety valve.
How to Confirm the Safety Valve is the Fault
- Switch the machine off and allow it to cool completely
- Remove the top panel and/or back panel (depending on your PB configuration)
- Locate the safety valve on the steam boiler — it is a brass valve body with a small lever or cap, connected to an outlet tube that routes to the rear of the machine
- Look for white scale deposits, moisture, or visible weeping around the valve body or where the outlet tube connects
- Run the machine briefly at operating temperature (with panels off, standing clear) and watch for steam escaping from the valve body — switch off immediately once confirmed
💡 Tip: Scale deposits (white or brown residue) around the valve body or outlet tube are a reliable indicator of a weeping valve — even if you can't see active steam, the scale shows where moisture has been escaping over time.
How to Replace the Safety Valve
What You'll Need
- Replacement safety valve (see product below)
- Adjustable spanner or correct open-ended spanner
- PTFE tape for the threaded fitting
- Towel to catch residual water
Step 1 — Switch Off, Unplug, and Cool Down
Power the machine off and unplug it from the wall. Turn off the water supply. Allow the machine to cool fully — at least 30–45 minutes after last use. The boiler holds pressurised hot water and must be fully depressurised before the valve is removed.
Step 2 — Release Boiler Pressure
Once the machine is cool, open the steam wand valve briefly to release any residual pressure from the boiler. You will hear a short hiss as pressure drops. Once the hissing stops, the boiler is depressurised and safe to work on.
Step 3 — Remove the Old Safety Valve
Place a towel under the valve to catch any residual water. Using a spanner, carefully unscrew the safety valve from the boiler fitting. Turn anti-clockwise to loosen. Once removed, inspect the valve seat and the boiler fitting threads for scale or damage.
Step 4 — Fit the New Safety Valve
Apply PTFE tape to the threads of the new safety valve (2–3 wraps, clockwise direction). Screw the new valve into the boiler fitting by hand first, then tighten firmly with a spanner. Do not overtighten — the valve body is brass and can crack if over-torqued. Reconnect the outlet tube to the new valve.
Step 5 — Refit Panels and Test
- Refit the top and back panels
- Turn the water supply back on
- Plug the machine in and power it on
- Allow the machine to heat to full operating temperature
- Check the cup tray and back panel for any further condensation
- Inspect around the new valve fitting for leaks

Frequently Asked Questions
Is condensation on the cup tray always the safety valve?
On the La Marzocco PB, condensation specifically on the top cup tray and back panel is almost always the safety valve outlet tube routing steam to those surfaces. Can I keep using the machine while the safety valve is weeping?
We recommend against it. A weeping safety valve means steam is continuously escaping inside the machine. Over time this causes moisture damage to electrical components, wiring, and the control board. The sooner the valve is replaced, the less risk of secondary damage.
Why did the safety valve fail?
Safety valves have a rubber or PTFE seat that wears with age and repeated actuation. On machines that have experienced boiler overheat events (due to a failing pressurestat), the valve may have been forced open at high pressure, damaging the seat. Regular servicing helps identify pressurestat drift before it causes valve damage.
Do I need to replace the outlet tube at the same time?
If the outlet tube (T115601) shows scale buildup, cracking, or corrosion, replace it at the same time as the valve. A blocked or damaged outlet tube can cause back-pressure on the new valve and shorten its service life.
