Its job is to prevent a vacuum forming inside the boiler when the machine cools down — without it, the boiler could implode as it cools. When the anti-vacuum valve fails, its internal seal wears out and it begins to leak steam or water continuously, even during normal operation. This is the most common cause of hissing and unexplained water loss on the Mini, GS3, and Micra.

Cause 2: Leaking Safety Valve or Pipe

The safety relief valve protects the boiler by venting excess pressure if the pressurestat fails and the boiler overheats. If the safety valve seal has been damaged — typically from repeated actuation due to a prior pressurestat fault — it will weep or drip continuously even at normal operating pressure. Similarly, a cracked or loose pipe fitting connected to the boiler can produce a hissing sound and cause water loss.
