Rocket Coffee Machine Power Light Keeps Flashing? Here's What It Means
分享
A flashing power light on your Rocket espresso machine is the machine's way of telling you something isn't right. It won't always mean a serious fault — in many cases it's a simple water detection issue that takes seconds to resolve. Work through the four causes below in order before assuming the worst.
⚠️ Safety First
If you need to open the machine at any point, always unplug it from the wall first and allow it to cool completely before touching any internal components.
1. ★ Most Likely: Water Sensor Issue or Low Water
The most common cause of a flashing power light on Rocket machines is a water detection problem. Rocket espresso machines use a water level sensor (probe) inside the boiler to detect whether there is sufficient water. When the sensor can't confirm adequate water level, the machine flashes and refuses to heat — a safety measure to prevent the boiler running dry.
There are two scenarios here:
Scenario A — Low Water or Empty Tank
The simplest explanation. Check your water tank — if it's low or empty, refill it and allow the machine to pump water into the boiler. The flashing should stop once the boiler reaches the correct level.
Scenario B — Pure or Filtered Water (Very Common on New Machines)
If your machine is brand new and flashing straight out of the box, or you've recently switched to purified, RO (reverse osmosis), or distilled water — this is almost certainly the cause. Rocket's water level sensor works by detecting the electrical conductivity of the water. Pure water has very low mineral content and therefore very low conductivity, which means the sensor cannot detect it properly — even when the boiler is full.
The fix: Switch to regular tap water or a water with moderate mineral content (TDS of 75–150 ppm is ideal for espresso machines). Avoid using 100% pure or distilled water in any machine with a conductivity-based water sensor.
💡 Tip: If you prefer filtered water, use a filter that retains some minerals (such as a BWT filter) rather than one that removes everything. This keeps the water sensor working correctly while still protecting the boiler from scale.
If the water sensor itself is faulty or corroded, it will need to be cleaned or replaced. Contact our team for assistance identifying the correct sensor for your Rocket model.
2. Sleep Mode (Newer Rocket Models)
Newer Rocket espresso machines — particularly those with electronic controls — include an automatic sleep mode that activates after a period of inactivity. When in sleep mode, the power light may flash slowly to indicate the machine is in a low-power standby state rather than fully off or fully on.
How to wake the machine from sleep mode:
- Pull the group lever up (on lever machines) to engage the group and wake the machine.
- Alternatively, press the main power button or brew button briefly to reactivate.
- The machine should resume heating and the flashing should stop within a few seconds.
If the machine wakes and heats normally, sleep mode was the cause — no repair needed. You can usually adjust or disable the sleep mode timer in the machine settings if you find it activating too quickly.
3. Control Board Failure
If the water level is correct, the water isn't pure, and the machine isn't in sleep mode — but the light is still flashing and the machine won't operate — the control board may have failed. The control board manages all electronic functions on the machine. A fault here can cause erratic behaviour including a persistent flashing light with no other obvious cause.
Signs pointing to a control board fault:
- Flashing light persists regardless of water level
- Machine behaves erratically or inconsistently
- No response to button presses
- Fault appeared suddenly, possibly after a power surge or outage
- All other components (pump, element, solenoids) appear to be working
Control board replacement is a moderate repair — the board is accessible once the panels are removed and connects via a wiring harness. Make sure you photograph all connections before disconnecting anything.

A less common but important fault: if your Rocket machine's pump is running continuously and filling the boiler by itself without stopping — and the power light is flashing — the issue is likely with the boiler fill circuit rather than the sensor or board.
Rocket machines use a two-way fill solenoid valve to control water flow into the boiler during the auto-fill cycle. If this solenoid becomes blocked with limescale or debris, or if the fill pipe leading to it is blocked, the machine may behave erratically — either overfilling, underfilling, or running the pump continuously as it tries to reach the correct level.
Signs of a blocked fill solenoid or fill pipe:
- Pump runs continuously and doesn't stop after filling
- Machine keeps flashing even with a full tank
- Water level in the boiler is inconsistent or incorrect
- Gurgling or unusual pump sounds during the fill cycle
Clearing a blocked fill solenoid involves disassembling the valve and soaking the components in descaling solution. A blocked fill pipe can sometimes be cleared with a descale cycle, but in more severe cases the pipe or solenoid may need replacement.
This repair requires opening the machine and working near the boiler circuit. If you're not confident diagnosing or clearing the fill solenoid yourself, we strongly recommend contacting our service team rather than attempting it without guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use filtered water in my Rocket machine?
Yes — but use a filter that retains some minerals, not one that removes everything. Fully demineralised or RO water will cause the water sensor to malfunction. A BWT Penguin filter or similar mineral-retaining filter is ideal.
My Rocket is brand new and already flashing — is it faulty?
Almost certainly not. Brand new machines flashing immediately is almost always a pure water issue. Switch to tap water or mineral water and the problem will resolve. If it persists after switching water, contact us.
How do I know if my Rocket model has sleep mode?
Sleep mode is found on newer electronically controlled Rocket models. Check your machine's manual or contact us with your model name and we'll confirm whether sleep mode applies to your machine.
The pump keeps running and won't stop — should I turn the machine off?
Yes — switch the machine off immediately if the pump is running continuously without stopping. Running the pump dry or overfilling the boiler can cause damage. Contact our service team before attempting to run the machine again.
