La Marzocco Coffee Machine No steam and Hot water ? Here's What to Check
Share
If your La Marzocco espresso machine's steam boiler has stopped heating, don't panic. This is one of the most common service issues we see, and in most cases it comes down to one of four causes. Work through them in order — from the simplest fix to the most complex.
1. The High Limit Switch Has Tripped (Most Common)
The high limit switch (also called a safety thermostat) is a small but critical safety device. Its job is to cut power to the boiler if the temperature exceeds a safe threshold — protecting your machine from overheating damage.
When it trips, the boiler simply stops heating. The good news? Sometimes it just needs a reset. The bad news? If it keeps tripping, the switch itself may be faulty and needs replacing.
How to Reset It
- Turn off and unplug your machine
- Allow it to cool completely (at least 30 minutes)
- Locate the high limit switch on the steam boiler — it’s a small disc-shaped component with a reset button in the centre
- Press the reset button firmly until you feel a click
- Power the machine back on and test
If it trips again shortly after, the switch is worn out and needs replacing.

2. Faulty Heating Element
If the high limit switch is fine, the next suspect is the heating element inside the steam boiler. Over time, heating elements can burn out — especially in machines with hard water or infrequent descaling.
How to Test It with a Multimeter
- Turn off and unplug the machine — safety first
- Allow the boiler to cool completely before opening the machine
- Locate the heating element terminals on the steam boiler
- Set your multimeter to resistance (Ω) mode
- Place the probes on the two heating element terminals
- A healthy element will show a resistance reading (typically between 10–50Ω depending on wattage)
- If the multimeter reads OL (open loop) or infinite resistance, the element is blown and needs replacing

3. Solid State Relay (SSR) Failure
The solid state relay controls power delivery to the heating element. When it fails, the boiler receives no power — even if the element and thermostat are perfectly fine.
Signs of a failed SSR include:
- Boiler not heating at all despite other components testing fine
- Machine behaving erratically with heating cycles
- Visible burn marks or a burnt smell near the relay
Diagnosing and replacing an SSR requires electrical knowledge and the right tools. We recommend contacting our technical team — Bear Coffee machine offer professional La Marzocco service and repair across Australia.
4. Control Board Failure
The control board is the brain of your La Marzocco. In rare cases, a fault on the board can prevent the steam boiler from receiving the signal to heat. This is the least common cause but worth considering if all other components have tested fine.
Control board diagnosis and replacement is complex and should only be performed by a qualified technician. Contact our service team — we have experience repairing and sourcing La Marzocco control boards.
